I love to cook, I've always loved to cook.

As a young girl, my time was spent reading the cookbooks that mum kept in the bottom kitchen drawer. Always looking for a new recipe to try, a new food idea. Many weekends were spent making rainbow cakes with as many colours as possible – have you seen my Instagram, not much has changed, and looking for recipes that I could cook using what was available in the cupboard or from the vegetable garden.

At the aged of about 16, I remember stating that I wanted to leave the farm and travel the world. This would be followed by retiring by about 30 and moving back to South Gippsland to grow vegetables and cook. From 16 fast forward 20 years and I returned, starting Jacican Food Studio in Mirboo North, Gippsland where I grow vegetables and cook. This blog is where I share my food adventure.


In 2014, I opened Jacican Food Studio in the old Mirboo Nth Dairy on Giles Street.  That same year I won the Gippsland Business Award for  best “New Business”, and since then Jacican has gone from strength to strength.
The application for the Gippsland Business Awards was a great opportunity for us to examine where we were as a business and where we wanted to go from there. We have exceeded our expectations now that I look back on that.
We are now open three days a week, have hired local staff, and take part in various activities with community groups and community events, such as the recent Thorpdale Potato Festival.
While being a great accomplishment for my new business, taking part in the awards helped me get out into the community and meet lots of other great individuals and local businesses. 
When it comes to filling out a submission for the awards my advice is that businesses should really focus on why they are in Gippsland and what benefits they bring to the local area. 
While applications don't need to be long-winded, they should be detailed and very focused on the achievements the businesses have made in Gippsland in particular.
Jacican has been nominated for the 2017 awards and I am looking forward to submitting my application.
Last awards night I got to meet Denis Walter, forgot my speech and made up most of my thank you's on the spot!
Everyone was very encouraging from the judging panel, to the other businesses that took part, and I am thoroughly looking forward to taking part again this year.
